Solar Energy Dominated Over Other Renewables in 2016: What’s Next?

photovoltaic (PV) systems, solar power

The 2016 report by the International Energy Agency stated that the solar power usage was twice as much in 2016 than in previous years. The increased interest in solar panels company reviews also proves this fact. So far, this is the first time when photovoltaic (PV) systems were utilized more than any other sources of fuel or energy. According to the IEA predictions, in the following year, the PV technology will continue dominating over other renewables.

The interest to renewable emerged in 1973 after the world lived through the first substantial oil crisis. Last year was significant for a solar PV market because of 165 gigawatts of renewables completed, which is the two-thirds of the net new power capacity worldwide. Particularly the use of photovoltaic solar panels increased by 50%.

The Predictions

Renewable energy capacity is expected to increase by approximately 1,000 GW for the next five years. These are wonderful results compared with the coal production, which managed to achieve such results only after 80 years in the market.

Faith Birol, the executive director of the International Energy Agency:

“This is a half of the global capacity of the coal production. What we are witnessing is the birth of a new era in solar PV. We expect that solar PV capacity growth will be higher than any other renewable technology through 2022.”

China and India contributed the most to the increase of the PV technology in 2017. Together with the United States, these two countries will have the most impact on the global expansion of the renewables. By 2022, the total capacity of the PV technology should exceed the today’s total power capacity of India and Japan.

New Perspectives

Why is China to become the largest solar PV promoter? This is a merit of the Chinese government, in the first case. No secret, the country has become an absolute leader in manufacturing. The negative aspect of manufacturing, though, is the air pollution and many other environmental issues that cause smogs in China’s largest megacities. The state does everything to reduce the amount of coal energy and switch completely to renewable energy sources, in particular, the solar energy.

Along with China, renewables are widely supported in India and the United States. India, by the way, offers the lowest prices both for the solar PV and the wind power technologies. The U.S. has the second largest market for renewable sources of energy after Chine.

Even though the current American president Donald Trump is currently supporting the coal production, it’s predicted that the country would continue being the second largest market for renewables.

Current Situation

The IEA also emphasized on the increased popularity of electric vehicles. The consumption of electric cars, buses and other vehicles is about to double in the following years. Now there have been a lot of attention to EVs, however, we also need to get a credit to biofuels, which demonstrated an 80% of growth in the total renewable energy consumption in transport.

Currently, the cost of biofuels is twice as more than the average price of gasoline but the situation may change if the government contributes to the production of biofuels from non-edible plants.

And don’t forget about Elon Musk’s plans to provide the whole USA with solar panels.
